Hey all!
WELCOME TO UNBOXED LIVE! You made it. Congrats on taking the first step off the beaten track to carve out your non-traditional career.
After working with literally 100s of generalists, Lindsey and I have identified and refined four modules that we’ve identified as THE most needle-moving to turn your range into revenue.
#1 The Generalist Mindset #2 The One-Liner #3 The Skill Stack #4 The Atomic Influence Thesis
I know, we’re excited too. So let’s get stuck into it. Today’s email is all about adopting the generalist mindset.
We know it’s kinda ironic, but the generalist mindset is about recognising that you are more than your generalist identity. Rather than getting lost in ‘being’ a generalist, it’s about embracing generalism as an approach to your work. Once you’ve accepted that you are a multifaceted human being who signs your own permission slip to be more than one thing, you liberate yourself to build a life and career that’s uniquely yours.
Practically, this is about approaching your career like it’s a portfolio of experiments. Rather than putting pressure on yourself to get everything right the first time, start to view every career decision as an experiment and an opportunity to learn. Wherever you’re at in your journey, every experiment you run is a data point to inform your future decisions.
So (rubs hands together gleefully): let’s plan our first one.
Step 1: Identify an Area for Experimentation
Prompt: Think about your recent interests or any skill gaps you've noticed. What excites you or where do you feel you need more confidence?
Example: "I want to improve my public speaking skills."
Step 2: Set a Hypothesis
Prompt: Frame it as an “If...then...” statement. What do you expect to happen?
Example: "If I take a public speaking course, then I will feel more confident presenting at meetings."
Step 3: Design the Experiment
Prompt: Be specific about the actions you will take. Consider the duration (e.g., 7-14 days), resources needed, and specific actions.
Example: "I will enroll in an online public speaking course and practice speaking in front of a mirror daily for 10 minutes for the next 14 days."
Step 4: Plan Metrics for Success
Prompt: Think about tangible ways to measure your progress. It could be feedback, self-assessment, or achieving specific results.
